Car cranked no start; towed home then start 700 1990

I went to store in my 1990 760 wagon. When I came out the car started then died. I started it again, it would idle but when I steped on the gas it would die. It would restart then died again. Finally all it would do is crank and not start. I think I heard the whine of the upfront fuel pump below the drivers seat. I towed it home. It did the same thing. But later in the day it started right up and I drove it around the block. I am afraid it is going to strand me again. Any ideas? Should I be ready to check fuel pressure if it does this again? I was thinking about adding a schrader valve fitting to the fuel rail so I could check it easily on the road.
