4th Gear Switch Install

The "device" you are referring to is the reverse lock-out.

Not sure what you mean by origin of the gearbox. The casting number doesn't mean anything to me anyway.
The reverse light switch "can" doesn't appear to have a contact, so I would guess that this is a late M41 w/ a J-type. That would lead me to believe that if it is from a 140 series, it would be '72 - '74. I have no idea if an 1800 used the contact on the can in the later models. I suspect they didn't.
