Rough Downshift from 3rd to 2nd just started. 900 1996

Dear chriseaker,

Hope this finds You well. Look in the coolant "overflow" tank. The coolant should be a clear green. If you see a pinkish, oily film atop the coolant, that suggests the in-radiator automatic transmission fluid (ATF) cooler has failed.

The water - that makes up about half of the coolant - attacks the glue, that adheres transmission clutch pack facings to the clutch discs. Clutch facing micro-fibers can plug fluidways in the control body - wherein are located the valves, that control shifting - producing rough shifts. Eventually, if the coolant is not removed, the tranny will be ruined.

When you just had the tranny flushed, did you see - or get a report on - the condition of the old ATF? Was there any sign of water in it, i.e., was it cloudy? What color was it? Good ATF should be a clear, rosy red.

First step: look in the cooling system overflow tank, and post back with your findings.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
