I bought a 1991 Black 240 with 110000 miles. It was an ebay car, so I bought sight unseen. Something I never do. The car needs some work, but the price was right 2300.00, so it allowed some some money to be spent on it without too much of an ouch factor.
I must have had the new(used) car googoo, because I overlooked some things that I know better to look for. For instance, both motormounts were broken, and the overdrive. To date, this is what I have done to the car, and what needs to be done.
1. I had to put a starter on it off one of my parts car. It had some little piece of crap aftermarket starter that didn't sound right.
2. The spark plugs were stuck in cylinders 2,3,4. Original Volvo plugs. at 109000 miles. Not a good (neglected?) sign. Both motor mounts were broken, fixed.
3. No overdrive. I fixed all of the above so far.
4. Trans fluid. It was old, I changed it.
5. The front end squeaks going over bumps. I know the front end needs some work, but maybe not a total rebuild. It is fairly tight, but the squeek is driving me crazy. And, I hear the occasional clunk, but all in all the front end isn't too loose. I think I will start out by replacing the ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar bushings, and see how ir rides, and go from there. If the spark plugs were possibly original, then the front end is probably original.
It is a florida car, so no rust, but the plastic and rubber are not perfect, but workable. I ordered new rubber window scrapers, and cloth dash cover.
The interior is in great shape. Ordered a new console for it, another 50.00.
Now I am hearing some crap from the 'ol battleaxe because of all the work I am having to do to the car. The motor sounds great, it still runs a little rough and maybe a little down on power. And the trans works fine.
So, did I get screwed?
