Need advice on a 2002 V70 XC - it depends, probably avoid 2002

Look at the All Wheel Front Wheel forum and you can read plenty there about the XC models.

Take this car to a skilled Volvo mechanic for an inspection! No service history is an immediate red flag. Why not? Previous owners were lazy slobs who didn't do maintenance or keep track of paperwork? Or the dealer threw the papers away to hide something? The price is much too high.

I think the general conclusion is avoid the AWD models unless you really need this feature, such as for skiing or if you live in Vermont or Montana. Otherwise, the maintenance is expensive and gasoline mileage suffers. Thousands of buyers are convinced they need AWD, but this is a result of one of the most successful marketing campaigns in recent years from the automobile industry. It's really funny to see the AWD BMWs and Volvos sold in Florida....
