Torn boot on the front end rack: an easy replacement? 200

So no wonder the front end was pulling like hell: the rack is a wee bit loose and the boot to the side of the pull is torn. The wear on the tire is pretty high and that made it go even faster.

Mechanic says that my best investment is just in a new rack, as mine has evidence of some leakage, but overall it's fine at the moment. He wobbled the wheels a bit and I could see the play he was talking about (not severe, but noticeable).

There is absolutely no way I can do this myself, so it's just a matter of money...probably 400-500 bucks for a new rack. Yet so far it's not a problem, the car drives fine. But if I replace the boot a little later, would that be a happy medium? The boot will just keep water out, from the looks of it, and i don't foresee too much rain in my future until around september. Unless the boot has another job other than protection?

appreciate any thoughts you have. thank you
