Car stalled out? alternator problem? 200 1989

I was driving this morning and probably eight miles into the drive I could feel the car pretty much shut off. As I was coasting I could still press the gas pedal and it would rev a little but it was almost like I didn't have another gear and it seemed like it was just slowing down. So I pulled over, turned off the car and tried to turn it on again and it cranked a little. I tried again and it turned over one or two times. I waited a couple of minutes and then tried to start it again. This time it started up and I was able to drive it two or three miles before it shut off again. After this the car wouldn't even crank. Is this a problem with the alternator? Any tests that I can run?

much thanks,

Jimmy
