Just bought a volvo 240DL 1987 but now can't get it to start 200 1987

Just bought a volvo 240DL 1987 but now can't get it to start...Drove the car home a couple of miles, started it everyday in the drive way (no drive because not inspected or registered yet)Went away Thursday came back Sunday and now can not get it to run. Changed fuses, battery good and charged, topped off the gas, checked connections. Tried push starting it and popping it off in reverse, would run for a few seconds and then quickly die. (Heavy car!) Almost seems like it's not getting any gas? Don't know anything about cars :( Any suggestions on where to start? Advise greatly appreciated!
