1992 965 Replacing stereo/cd player Amp connection questions 900

I'm in the process of upgrading the stereo system to accomodate an ipod and have been told that the 4 door speakers are powered by an amp somewhere. The front speakers in the dash are wired directly and power up fine. The connection to the amp doesn't seem to want to easily wire in to the new radio unit.

Has anyone run into this issue and is there a relatively easy work around? The guy assisting me has indicated that the 4 speakers controlled by the amp will need to be rewired and that possibly only 2 will work.

I'm confused.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
