High idle culprit found...I think 200 1985

It's my '85 244 M46 210K. I had recently posted about the high idle problem and I think the culprit was the IAC. This is what I did. With warm engine off I covered the IAC intake nipple on the TB flat area with plastic and replaced the IAC intake hose. Then I started the engine and set the idle to 750 with the black idle thumb screw whereupon it idled fine and steady. Then I removed the IAC hose and plastic and then the engine stalled. I replaced the hose and started the engine and the idle shot up to 1200.
Q 1. Does this not implicate the IAC?
Q 2. Is there any other way to test the IAC to confirm? Unfortunately for me I'm still ignorant of how to test with meters and such. I've gotta learn how.
Thanks for all your help, everyone.
