740 Estate (Not) Central Locking. 700 1990

Hi all,
after a week or so of deteriorating functionality of the central locking (I used to have to slam the driver door to trigger something that allowed the key lock to trip the other doors), the central locking is now not functioning as designed. I used to hear a trip noise in (I think) the rear door which preceeded a successful central lock but that has now gone. Fuse is intact, I'm thinking a loose wire of failed 'widget' somewhere.

Has anyone been here before and able to provide some how to remedy ideas. We are thinking about a 1990 740 Limited 16 valve Estate. Thanks, Christopher.
