79 245 no overdrive tell me what to check...dash light comes on but tranny stays in 4th 200

79 does NOT have a relay. Power flow, battery positive, ignition switch, fuse, control switch, 4th gear switch AND dsah light, solenoid, battery neg through engine block.

Since dash light on, power is getting past the control switch but there is still the rest of the path to check.

Test: Ignition ON, Engine OFF, in 4th gear with dash light on...door OPEN.

Pull shift lever further to right and rear while listening for a click from the solenoid on the OD. IF a click while lever pulled to right and rear, replace the 4th gear switch.

If no click, leave test set up and reach under auto from left side, and wiggle wires on solenoid on OD. Any click inidcates bad connection. Clean and tighten.

If no noise yet, remove wire from solenoid with test set up above. If solenoid clicks or sparks jump as you remove/attach wire, time to replace actuating piston O-rings, IF fluid level in tranny is full. If no spark, replace the 4th gear switch after tracing the wires from inside to the 4th gear switch.
