Hello,
If memory serves, your going to have to strip back the headliner in the rear around the hatch hinges, and open up the hatch itself to access the other end of the wires. Sounds like you've got a bad ground? I wouldn't stop at just the hatch when checking for bad grounds, but repairing the broken wires should certainly help. I'm pretty sure IPD sells new tailgate harnesses, or if your cheap like me, a little wire and some butt splices go a long way.
