Any AW30 Transmission Experts? 900

"I have a couple of technical questions on the AW30 series automatic transmission in a 1995 960. To start, the tranny I have works perfectly (knock on wood), these are just out of curiosity and perhaps a mod or two I am thinking about.

First a real easy question: Where is the best place to install a sender for a transmission temperature gauge? The sender I have has an 1/8 npt thread, will I need an adapter to install the sender into the place you think is best for installation? If so, what thread is it?

> The best place is in the valve body to get the most accurate temp but that's almost impossible if the trans isn't set up for it. The next best place is in the output line to the cooler, after that, the pan.

OK, now onto the theoretical and curiosity questions:

Q1. At what speed does the torque converter lock on flat ground slowly accelerating? I can feel the shifts and the obvious "shift" of the torque converter locking, but I don't know which "shift" the torque converter locking occurs at. Here is the reason I would like to know...On my diesel pickup truck, I have installed a switch that allows me to lock the torque converter anytime that I want and it automatically unlocks the torque converter whenever I brake to a stop. I find it useful and efficient, as well as reduces heat from torque converter rapid lock/unlock repeating conditions.

Q2. If a lockup switch could be devised for the 960 would it be wired to the torque converter lockup solenoid or through the torque converter module?

> If I had to guess, I would say the TCM (transmission control module), but you could probably wire it into the solenoid. The AW30-40 has the ability to lock the torque convertor in 3rd as well under certain conditions (overheated atf).

Q3. Does the torque converter lockup solenoid work by receiving a 12+ VDC signal to activate the solenoid (or as my truck does, it is always receiving a 12V signal when it is unlocked and goes to ground when the signal is sent to lock the torque converter)?

> Don't know for sure, I'd have to look that up but it's late now.

Q4. Has anyone modified the characteristics of the transmission mode switch (E,S, W switch near the shifter) to obtain different shifting characteristics? If so, any pointers?

> Nope, I'm happy with it the way it is.

Q5. Has anyone ever replaced the overdrive gearing in the tranny so that cruising engine RPM is lower? I run about 2500 rpm at 65 mph and I would like to lower that another 20% to about 2000 rpm. Perhaps the way is to add an external overdrive unit, but if it is possible to make this modification inside the tranny, I might like to go that way.
