Thrust Bearing 700

On some motors the thrust bearings are separate pieces that the are flat, U shaped and slide in along one of the main bearing journals. The Volvo motor has the thrust bearings built into one of the main bearings--you'll probably remember installing one bearing (set) that was different than the others--looking like a saddle. With the motor OFF--grab hold of the front pulley (or use something to pry with) and push/pull to make the pulley go forward and back. The play should be almost imperceptable. Years ago a friend of my son's asked if I would fix some items on his 740 and then sell it for him. I don't recall how I came to discover he had nearly 1/2 inch (or what seemed like 1/2 inch) in the crankshaft end play. I couldn't quite understand why it would have been so bad--a standard shift motor will have pressurer put on the thrust bearing each time you step on the clutch but this was an auto tranny car. I politely refused to get involved. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. -- Dave
