Noisy front suspension in cold temps 900

I have a '97 960 wagon with 80K on it. For some reason, whenever the temp is below 36 degrees (F), the front suspension makes a horrible sound every time I go over bumps in the road. Any thoughts as to what this may be and how to correct. Awhile ago, a mechanic simply snickered when I told him. He indicated that this was a fairly typical problem in Volvos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
