vexing starter mystery 200 1986

Dear Friends,
My wife's '86 240's been making the oft discussed high pitched gnashing starter whine, like the stater's failing to disengage properly. The other day she came to visit me at work, went to leave, and it wouldn't start - no solenoid click, nothing. I know the battery's fine so I try knocking the solenoid with screwdirver to no avail. We switch cars, I go to leave work, car starts fine and continues to do so, albeit with the intermittent starter run on noise. The noise combined with this on time failure lead me to think I should cut to the chase and just replace the starter, but not if that's not the problem.
Any and all input is welcome.
Gracias
