Nylon Antenna Mast Gear Feed Problem 900

I am having a tough time getting the power antenna to grab the nylon toothed gear line after replacing the antenna and mast. I understand the teeth are to face the front, but it does not seem to take. With the teeth facing the rear the nylon cable was chewed a bit on the internal gears, but did not grab. The FAQ says gear to the front is right. How far down do I need to feed the antenna before it should grab? This should be easy, so ideas appreciated.
