need tuy an engine harness but 200

My son bought his first car last night; A 84 2444DL complete with bad wiring.
Car is clean and runs with nice and quiet. Primary problem is the wiring. Previous owner's dad had partially wired the engine but it sort of wanders around. As a result the new battery isn't being charged, by the new alternator,
The light is on in the cluster, but as we were late getting home all I did was measure the battery voltage (11.6) and say well P.J. it's a 500$ car, now is a good time to start learning about your car.\
So two questions. Where can I find an engine harness for sale, and what is anyone's best guess about why the alternator isn't charging?
Paul
