Make sure new ignition key works smoothly..burned up starter story & question 900 1992

So we just got this "new" 1992 940 Turbo last month and we love it. 94K and original pampered condition...almost everything works and the Brickboard has helped me with the liitle problems. The key was getting beat, so I got one made at my local hardware store. In the door locks the new key is golden but in the ignition it is very stiff to turn. So the girlfriend loses the original and uses the new key in the car. But it does not click back from the start position because it is too stiff. She calls me after driving for 10 minutes and tells me the car is making a funny "WHIRRING" noise and explains about the lost key as well. Also the radio and windows do not work!
It occurs to me that the new key is still engaging the starter so I tell her to turn the key back to run position in ignition. As you can guess the noise stops and the windows and radio start to work. Of course I am worried about damage to starter, wiring harness, battery, flywheel ETC. She finds the original key and and after letting the car sit for a few minutes she starts it up and everything is fine. Very lucky right? I thought so too.
4 hours later when she leaves work the car will not turn over. No clicking, no nothing. After checking Brickboard FAQs on the starter system. I use a wire to jump the starter from + Battery to small connector on the starter. Engine doesn't turn nor is there any clicking from the solenoid. We get a rebuilt starter for $115 install it and this seems to have fixed the problem.
My question is....why did the car start that second time? Was is just warmed up and somehow the starter had one more blast left in it? Is there anything else I should pay attention to in the coming days or do you think I will be good to go? thanks.
