I don't think I've ever seen an aftermarket head unit that called for 8 Ohm speakers. However, there ARE some 2 Ohm speakers out there now, designed for more volume, I guess. But I'd think you would overheat your head unit before blowing out the speakers.

Very strange. You don't happen to somehow have the stock amp still connected, do you? Just a thought, but I believe some 240s got an amp that only drove the rear speakers, the head unit had it's own amp to drive the fronts. Am I remembering wrong? Anyway, if you had the rear speakers double-amped, that would cause your problem.
