driveshalf zerks 140-160

While doing the tranny auto to manual swap on my 68 I thought I would check out the U joints in the driveshaft. This is the small diameter driveshaft. There are zerks in the U joints. There are straight zerks. They are threaded in pointing right down the middle of the driveshaft. Bending at the U joint there is no way to get a grease fitting on the zerk. Is it expected that you would remove the U joints to service them. The U joints seem in good shape. Was there a spocial tool used to service these grease fittings?
