speedometer bench test? 900 1994

My new-to-me 940 had intermittent fuel gauge issue. I pulled the cluster once, fiddled with the little screws and connectors, to no avail. Last week I smacked the top of dash with my hand and the gauge came on. Great! Next day, again, except this time the speedo died instantly.

I spent 2 hrs, dismantled the whole cluster, cleaned all the contacts, checked solder joints and all the light bulbs. Everything works now, including fuel gauge - except the speedo. No speed, odometer or cruise control. My guess is I damaged something in the gauge itself.

Is there a simple bench test I could do myself? Or something to check in the gauge?
Judging by all the posts here and turbobricks, these are not the most reliable instruments.
