Dodgy Ignition switch? 120-130

Hi...for the second time ever, my amazon died on me today...that was a shock.
I was sat in traffic, ticking along sweetly, when suddenly all went quiet, dead as a dodo.
Right on a nasty junction in rush hour too, added bonus...thing was, when I turned the key in the ignition, I had no dash lights, and no starter, nothing. Balls thought I. First thought was knackered alternator, run battery down, big problem. Checked everything under the hood, all was fine, no loose wires etc ( The car is very well looked after). Got back in, but still no dash lights, and no start. Back under bonnet, fiddled about a bit with coil wires, all seemed fine, back in car, ignition lights on, started, off I went, relieved. Now, what would cause my dash lights (and handbrake light iirc) to all be out? dodgy ignition switch?
Once back home I removed various coil wires to try to recreate the symptoms, but dash lights went on whatever I did, so it's not a dodgy connection there, and they were all tight to begin with anyway..and isn't that a different circuit? I looked at the ignition switch as best I could, all connections seem good there also. I am a little perplexed, electrics are not my thing.
All thoughts gratefully relieved, I don't want that to happen again.
Thanks.
d
