75 Volvo 242 140-160

I had originally posted this question in the 200 series forums, but since the Volvo that I am looking at seems to be a "hybrid" of sorts I thought it would better to post here instead since the question I have is more mechanical than anything. I have heard both good and bad about the 75 Volvo 242 4sp that I am looking at. I know that basically its an older engine/drivetrain stuffed into a 242 chasis. Is this a vehicle that should be avoided because of the drivetrain? I am not against working on vehicles myself. The 242 has 189k miles, its being used as a daily driver. Of course it is an old car so I know there will be some issues. A plus is that it is an manual and they only want 500.00 dollars for it. I appreciate your insight and advice. Also I will include a photo of the prospective Volvo.
