tailgate shock replacement-940 wagon 900

I just received a set of replacement tailgate shocks from FCPGroton. The design of the fastener on each end looks a little different from ones I've replaced before. These have a 1/4" or so metal band to secure the shock to the ball on the stud. There is a small slot between the plastic and the back side of this band. I'm assuming that I just insert a small tool to pry it out before attaching to the ball, then push it back in afterward. Thought I would check, just in case I am wrong, so I don't tear it up. Confirmation or correction much appreciated. Thanks.
