cold start valve and thermo timer on a 1980 200 1980

Any body know if a defective thermo timer could leave the cold start valve running continuously? The car had some real problems starting and running smooth.
I disconnected the lead to the cold start valve and it smoothed out real nice.I have yet to pull the valve out and see if it sprayed continuously.Just wondering if anyone had thoughts on this. The car starts fine now without the lead being connected. The second i reatach the lead the car dies.
Thanks in advance.
Chris
