I think it's time for a new diesel to gas conversion thread. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! 200

Hello all, Well after much persistence it finally runs. That's the good. I tried a technique that my local Volvo guru suggested. He said that you take 2 probe test lights and ground both the system and pump relays with them going from terminal 87 I think (the red/yellow wires). He said that those relays are grounded through the ECU and that they always should have a small amount of voltage so that's why you use a test light instead of a straight ground wire. I removed one of the test lights at the ground side and the car still ran. When I removed the second one the car died. When I reconnected the second one then I could start the car again. The ECU that I first tried this on was one that I pulled from one of my '84 parts cars. When I removed the ECU from the parts car I noticed that the PO had run a seperate ground wire from both of these relays to the mounting screw on the ECU. After that I decided that I would try the other ECU that was from my other '84 parts car and it ran also. Then I removed the scond test light and it still runs. I'm hearing some rattling from the engine when it's running from what seems to be the cam gear under the cover. That's the bad. And now for the ugly: I was so psyched that this thing was finally running that I decided to take it around the block. It's not licensed or even has working lights but what the heck, I live in the country. When I put the trans. into reverse and let out on the clutch, it kept jumping out of gear. I couldn't even hold it into gear. Then I put it into first gear and pulled forward and it jumped out of first gear as well. Please, please, please tell me that you all think maybe my clutch cable is mis-adjusted and I don't have to pull the transmission. When it pops out of gear I can hear the gears grinding. I don't need another major fiasco with this thing. It's so close to going on the selling block at this point. I have been neglecting other things that I should be doing because of this car. Honestly, I'm tired of looking at it in my driveway. Incidently, I have a driveway that slopes down into the garage that's in the basement and because of this problem, I couldn't even get the car out of the driveway! I appreciate all of the help from everyone here on the BB. I couldn't have gotten this far without you. But, alas, I must call on my friends here one more. What all do you think of this trans. issue. Thanks again, Charles
