why is the BW35 trans despised? 140-160

I noticed a nice-looking 144 automatic for sale recently. I'm not considering buying it (I'm looking for a parts car), but I'm wondering why the BW35 auto transmission seems so unpopular. I used to own a 1972 145 automatic back in the early 90's. It was fine around town, but I remember being disappointed by not being able to ascend Mt Hood substantially faster than I could in my 1971 VW bus. At the time I put this down to not especially strong compression (the engine had 175k on it), rather than gearing or trans-related issues.
