I have a car that runs like a champ at 80 mph, but a little rough at idle.
First I put in fancy new split fire plugs into my 1976 265 (27F) and at the same time played a bit with the 3 adjustment screws on the intake manifold for the air/fuel mixture and idle. Now it runs rougher than ever. Symptoms:
1. sometimes stalls when I put it into gear--otherwise idles high
2. begins to miss when it gets hot (I notice it when I come to a stop light after driving it at high speeds).
3. idle speed surges a little bit
4. sometimes hard warm start (already replaced fuel accumulator).
5. Exhaust smells like raw fuel
I did have some problems getting off/on wires--so I don't know if I need to start there. Fuel cap is leaking (could that be part of the problem?) and I pulled out the air filter because it was clogged, but I can't find a replacement filter??
I'm also having a hard time finding a mechanic that wants to touch a this old fuel-injected system. Most everyone, including me, is clueless about it.
Help, I just want my old 265 back. It looks good, but it is just running a little rough now. If this ran better (and got better gas mileage) I would keep it forever. Just bury me in the thing. The nicest thing about it is that none of my teen drivers bother me about borrowing it. My 12-year-old has an eye on it, but wait until he becomes a teen like the rest of them . . .
