new under axle exhaust pipe hitting axle...solutions? 200 1989

On my wagon w/148k I just bought and installed a new under axle exhaust pipe and new rear muffler from FCP. Everything looks the same as the original, but I've got a nasty loud smacking sound when I go over speed bumps. I had a buddy drive the car back and forth over a bump while looking underneath and it looks like when the axle is coming down off the bump and the springs are decompressing that the axle drops down far enough to land on the pipe, creating the noise.

Can I just go to a muffler shop and have them take the thing off and give it a slight bend?

Note: i just took off the overload coils in the rear and reinstalled the original springs. I also have a hunch that the Sachs shocks I put on about 10k ago could be shot (although they aren't leaking oil and have resistance on compression/decompression). Is it possible for them to be allowing too much travel?
