oil leaks for dummies 200 1993

OK, I'm the dummy in this case, although I did finally figure it out. I've had a 93 245 with about 200K that I bought for $500 for almost 2 years ago. I could tell by the previous owner's driveway that there were oil leak issues and in talking with him, that the flame trap had never been serviced. He said he was selling because it needed a new rear main seal and he wasn't willing to spend that much on the car. There were and are a lot of good things about the car and I figured I might just be able to service the flame trap etc. and get away without changing the rear main seal, at least for awhile. Sure enough crankcase ventilation was a big issue, needing to have the oil separator replaced to resolve. I replaced the front cam seal and was down to about 1L lost every 2000 miles or so - not too bad, but still a persistant drip spot everywhere I parked it. Anyway, from day one I had been checking the rear cam seal - lots of oil back there before the flame trap service, not much or none afterwards - but here's the dummy part - I never checked it with the engine running and hot - it's too hot back there to feel around. Of course by the time it cooled down all the oil had dripped down the back - even wiping the area with a paper towel didn't reveal much evidence. Well, with an old leather glove with the engine running and hot, I found out the seal was leaking. I replaced it on the weekend and am eager to see what my consumption is like. Hope this helps someone.
