This is the ugly duckling in our household. One has always been neglected but never complained just kept on ticking. We've had it for 14 years. It accompnied our daughter in high school and through 6 years of college locally. I replaced the auto transmission fluid every 20k miles and mobile 1 every 10. All other fixes are on as needed basis, never preemtive. It has given us the least number of problems in our aging fleet. The body is good, no rust. But the engine is now near the end of the road.
The other day I did compression on the engine. It shows 125 to 130 psi pretty even on all holes. When the engine is started there is a faint engine light glowing for about 10 seconds and goes away. I found a 93 (vin series 88) engine in town at one of the junkyards at 100k miles for $350 and am thinking about replacing it. My question is how many seals are there to replace when I tackle it? I envision
the valve cover gasket,
the sump gasket,
the rear seal,
the fron seal,
and of course the timing belt.
Are there any thing else I should do with the drive train removed? I think I should do the water pump also. What else?
