Tailgate wiring question.... 200 1990

I'm trying to do the replacement harness repair in my 245 and as I started to pull out the wires on the right side hinge I noticed a thick black wire in the hinge along with the bundle of 4 wires in the grey sheathing.

This thick black wire (not in the bundle) is also broken at the hinge and I can't see where it attaches inside the car. Neither can I see where it goes in the tailgate.

I assume this is a necessary ground wire but I don't know where it attaches so I can feed another one through with my new wire harness.

any thoughts?

thanks,

jack
