Speedometer/ odometer question 200

Volvo 240DL - 1989 with 215,000 miles

I have been having problems with my speedometer/odometer. When the Speedometer stops working the odometer stops as well. I have taken out the instrument cluster and have hooked a multimeter up to the black and blue wires on the L connector and I am get increasing voltage as I speed up. I pushed the L connector on fairly hard and the speedometer is more consistent but it will still cut off on the middle of a drive. When I jiggle it, it sometimes jumps back up (that's what she said :). There must be some connection (at least between the black and red wire that supplies power to the instrument cluster) because the warning lights are coming on and the alternator is working. Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? What about attempting to resolder the connection on the instrument cluster where the L connector plugs into?

thanks,

Jimmy
