Steering vibration/rattle 700 1987

Hi folks,

More on my steering rattle after a few minutes playing around under the hood: seems to be the steering box itself.

I can put the car up on a jack, wiggle the tires like I'm examining the tie rod ends, and I have ~2mm of play with a quiet clunk at each extension. The inner tie rod is not loose from the end, and the boot moves the ~2mm too, so I really think that the looseness is NOT with the tie rod ends.

I reached in and wiggled the steering u-joints like I was instructed. I can definitely feel a clunk when wringing the u-joints, but they themselves are tight too. Pulling UP on the lower u-joint reveals a lot of play that seems to be in the rack.

Ok, looks like my rack could be loose on the chassis. How do I secure it to the frame? Is it under the center jacking point? What's the torque value?

Thanks,

Ari
