A/C conversion or something else? 200 1990

i have a 1990 240DL that i bought about a year and a half ago. i live in virginia, so sometimes it's really hot and humid, sometimes not. depends on the year. i've read through the FAQ and nothing really seemed to grab me and make sense. the A/C in my car (i don't know if it's r12 or r134a. the sticker says r12, but someone may not have changed it) blows somewhat cold, but not how i'd like it, sometimes and then just blows hot air the next. my questions are, how can i tell if it is an r12 system or not and also, could it be something like a sensor or relay?
