Throttle trouble on my '72 E 1800

Hey everyone, having a rather scary problem with the throttle on my 1972 1800E. I drove the car home on the freeway, but when I exited to go to the house, the throttle appeared to be stuck in max open position! The engine revs up to around 6500 rpm, and stays there, even though the pedal is not depressed. I managed to get it in safely, however, with quite a few turns of the key, but I was curious if anyone has an idea as to what is causing this. When i check the throttle body, it appears to be closed, and snaps back as though the spring is working, and pushing the accelerator pedal appears to open the throttle as it should. Any ideas?
