OK to start engine with leaking water pump?

Greetings!

I've just finished a head gasket repair 0n my '89 240, put everything back together, and I had a leak at the pump to head rubber ring. Tore it down, got a new pump gasket (Autozone! The dealer was out of stock), had another rubber ring and the one for the heater pipe. Tried again; pushed up hard; reassembled. Leaking again!

Before try # 3, I'd like to find out if the thing runs at all, if I've got the timing belt on correctly, etc. Is it safe to fill it with water and do a quick start before it loses too much water?

On the leak issue, I've read the FAQ and lots of posts on B230 water pump replacement, and thought I understood the process, but something is wrong. I did find it hard to apply upward pressure. It seemed that whatever I used and whatever I pried against, the angle was bad or the lever would slip.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
