'90 240 What noise does a worn rear wheel bearing make? 200 1990

This 240 (180,000 miles) started making intermittent metal on metal scraping noises. At first, applying the brakes made the noise stop, but later that wouldn't help. The noise sounds like worn out brake shoes, but pads are fine and brake noise usually starts when you apply brakes rather than stop when they're applied. There doesn't appear to be excessive play in any wheel when I try to shake them. Same with the center support bearing, no excessive play. Same with u-joints, no excessive play. I've never had a wheel bearing go out on a Volvo in hundreds of thousands of miles on a bunch of Volvos. E-brake shoes have been replaced. Any idea on what I should check next? Does this sound like wheel bearings? Thanks.
