yes, you're right on all fronts. the later versions of this car had a few safety upgrades. The ones I know of have more to do with side-impact collisions. They did some structural upgrades to the side of the car's body AND these cars were the first cars in the world to have standard side impact airbags for the front seat passengers (they pop out of the seat cushion).

I'm not sure about what they did with front end.
