Oil Changes - Miles vs. Time in the engine

I need your advice about changing my oil ('94 940, 150K miles). My situation is that it is taking me about six months or so to drive 3,000 miles. My daily commute is about 9 miles each way, most of which is on the freeway. I use a multi-grade 10-40 oil.

My recollection is that volvo recommends that oil be changed every 5,000 miles. I have assumed that my mechanic is being conservative in recommending a 3,000 mile interview.

Are there any criteria I can use (color, sediment, whatever) in helping me make this decision?

What is your advice? I'd appreciate hearing it.
Thanks.
