ball joints and timing belts 200 1993

So mechanic boyfriend failed my 93 244 for inspection this past weekend. I told him I took it as a personal insult. He told me my wheel was going to fall off. So, I'm now in the market for new ball joints. Are there any particular brands that are recommended or not recommended? I planned to order from FCP. Are the cheap ones ($17) ok or are the ones that cost twice as much twice as good?

I'm also coming up on due for a timing belt, so I figured I'd order that at the same time. I (and by I, I mean mechanic boyfriend) will definitely do the timing belt and tensioner, and probably the camshaft, crankshaft and intermediate shaft seals. Should I go ahead and do the water pump also? Why is that recommended at the same time?

Thanks!
