Blowing off a Blown Head Gasket? 900 1994

I'm pretty sure my 94 940 head gasket has "issues" from the trail of deposits weeping down the left side of the block between #2 and 3# and the fact it needs a half pint of coolant every month. But there doesn't seem to be coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant, and I do have huge carbon build up from the little old lady who used cheap gas for the cars last 80,000 miles (two miles at a time and apparently a few of which she ran toasty)

So I have reasons for pulling the head since an Italian tune up isn't an option with a weak HG. But it's a good back up car for the kids and I know once I start it will take weeks to finish it since summer is my busy season. What's the down side of letting it go, puttering around town and doing the head in the fall?
