They actually can be fired on 5 volts by the ECU. I've used a very quick flick of a 12 volt car battery for audible testing.

Likewise I was afraid of the excess amps. So, I split the difference and used a 9 volt cell later. Like in smoke alarms. You could try a 6 volt lantern one I guess?

The coils should be pretty hardy. Their heat sinked inside those steel bodies and fuel cooled.

It's best to keep the wire clip connectors clear of corrosion.
