Many people are familiar with this information but if you are not and the AC is not working in your 240 this may provide a bit of relief.

The “older” 240 cars (late 70’s to early 80’s?) had a manual vent located on the driver’s side panel ahead of the fuse box.

At some point Volvo eliminated this manual vent and simply screwed a flat steel panel over the opening. Up through 1989 model the side panel will still accept the manual mechanism from one of the older cars. You simply unscrew the fasteners on the steel plate, remove it, and secure the mechanical vent with the original fasteners.

If you find a donor car with the mechanical vent the rubber knob on the mechanism is held in place with a vertical pin that can be pressed up or down enough to remove the knob. It is a small diameter pin- less than 1/8”. Then remove the side panel giving you access to the five or six screws that hold the mechanism in place.

While this addition does not help at low speeds it makes a remarkable difference on the highway.
