spare volvo wheel vs. real wheel & tire? 900

This is a fairly obvious question, but I thought I'd ask anyhow. My car is a 1995 940 turbo wagon.

Recently, after getting a flat tire, I was informed by the Costco tire store that the spare Volvo wheel I had been using was unsafe and should not be used. It was brand new (after sitting in the trunk for 14 years that is... but still not a scuff on it). Apparently it has broken bands... though it seemed to work fine for the 10 miles I drove it.

Anyhow, I needed new tires, so I got an entire set and kept one extra for the spare.
Of course the new spare tire won't fit the Volvo skinny spare wheel.

My questions are:

* If I buy a new wheel to go with the extra old tire to use as a new 'spare', will this wheel size fit in the folding rear spare tire section?

* Does it make any sense to just look for a new Volvo spare tire instead? I figure if I'm off on a highway road trip I'd rather be driving with a real wheel and tire instead of a skinny little Volvo spare.

Thanks for sharing any thoughts on the subject...
