cruise control ? what situations does the light not go on. 200

Trying to get my car ready for a trip this weekend. Been going over the cruise control which has never worked since I bought the car. I traced all vacuum hoses and found the brake pedal hose split on both ends. Replaced any bad hose and cut ends off rest for strong hold.

I'm wondering since the light on the instrument panel doesn't light up at all then it might be something electrical, maybe a new switch on the steering column or the little black box that the wires feed in and out of.

Sorry for the influx of questions as of late. But what triggers the light. Will a bad vacuum stop it from coming on or is it going to be electrical.

Thanks.
