automatic transmission shifter 200

so i have this problem with my transmission shifter. when I started my car this morning the car started moving forward. when i put the shifter in park it was still moving forward. there was a lot of play in the shifter, meaning that it wouldnt slip into a notch to go in reverse and drive and low and so on. it would lock into the park position. Is this just a simple linkage problem? if so ...should i attack it from the inside by removing the plastic housing cover? or do i need to go under the car?
