wiring harness repair 200

Hi all,

My son, college student, has a wonderful '83 manual tranny wagon w/over 250K on it. He's driven it all over the country.

Today I spotted some ugly wiring. There's a photo here:

It's a connector back on the firewall, just behind the oil dipstick. A dozen or so wires coming in from the driver side. From there, six wires run off under the manifold. It's very fragile, so I'm hesitant to try to trace it.

Does anyone know what functions these wires serve? I'm trying to sort it out in Bentley. It looks like I could pull the manifold, throttle body, etc, get access to it, and build a new harness.

Any ideas/comments?
